STAYING HEALTHY
IF you're anything like me, you'll try everything to keep healthy and trim. Well, BMI is a better predictor of disease risk than body weight alone.
It is determined by calculating your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres
squared (BMI=kg/m2).
However, there are certain people who should not use BMI as the basis for
determining relative disease risk. These include competitive athletes and body builders,
whose BMI is high due to a relatively
larger amount of muscle, and women who are pregnant or lactating.
Nor is it intended for use in growing children or in frail and sedentary elderly individuals.
Health risk based solely on BMI: <25: minimal; 25-27: low; 27-30: moderate; 30-35:high;
35-40: very high; 40+: extremely high.
